a platform to establish Northern Europe into a globally recognised hub of world leading Life Science and innovation

The specific aim of HALOS is excellence in Life Science research and innovation around the four unique research infrastructures: MAX IV & ESS in Lund, and DESY & European XFEL in Hamburg. This will be achieved by developing a common and internationally recognized Life Science research and innovation hub, matching Life Science research questions with expertise on how to apply electrons, neutrons, synchrotron- and FEL-light. HALOS connects research infrastructures with both academic and industrial ecosystems, including complementary infrastructures and gate-way environments.

In order to secure long term growth in the region it is key to develop competence among young researchers as well as interlink industry and academia, putting effort into the whole innovation chain. The world class and highly complementary research facilities in HALOS offer an unique opportunity for not only competence development and research, but also innovation and increased business. HALOS will facilitate and provide educational initiatives, worskhops and routes for the life science sector to take full advantage of the unique research infrastructures. To achieve this, collaboration between the regional authorities is necessary and HALOS provides a platform for developing common strengths and initiate joint activities for education, innovation, researcher mobility and increase of industrial users to the region. Through HALOS a sustainable network will be formed with links between industry, the unique regional infrastructures, researchers in the healthcare sector and researchers in academia.

HALOS has a 3.6 million EUR EU Interreg ÖKS budget and deliveries include:

•40 six months projects with above 100 professionals in the Life Science sector active in cross border projects with highinnovation potential and/or of other interest for the industry using synchrotron-, FEL-light, neutrons and/or electrons.

•A pool of young researchers with high competence in synchrotron-, FEL-light, neutrons and/or electron applications in Life Science

•200 Life Science researchers, facility and company representatives with improved knowledge and increased interest in synchrotron-, FEL-light, neutrons and/or electron applications

•Three summer schools and three-four workshops with 120 participants from the Hamburg-ÖKS area

•Identification of key messages based on analyses and pilots and  a joint strategy for further regional cooperation

•Improved and formalised links between degree granting institutes in order to provide an optimal training environment for early career scientists. Estimated number: 7 (at least one per degree granting partner organisation) as well as bi- and multi-lateral agreements between organisations in the areas of Life Science training, research and innovation. Estimated number: 3 (at least one each for DK, SE and DE).
